Connect Gmail to AI Email Filter (App Password Guide)

Gmail works with AI Email Filter over IMAP. Google doesn’t accept your normal password for that — you need a separate app password. It takes about five minutes.

What you need

• A Gmail or Google Workspace address
• 2-Step Verification turned on for that Google account
• An AI Email Filter account (sign up free, 200 classifications included)

Step 1: Turn on 2-Step Verification

App passwords only exist for accounts with 2-Step Verification.

1. Open myaccount.google.com/security.
2. Under How you sign in to Google, select 2-Step Verification and follow the steps.

If it’s already on, skip to step 2.

Step 2: Create an app password

1. Open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords.
2. Enter a name you’ll recognise later, for example AI Email Filter, and select Create.
3. Google shows a 16-character password. Copy it — you won’t see it again.

The app password only gives mail access. You can revoke it on the same page at any time, which disconnects AI Email Filter immediately.

Step 3: Connect the mailbox

1. Sign in at app.email-filter.ai and add a mailbox.
2. Enter your Gmail address. The server settings are filled in automatically.
3. Paste the app password (spaces don’t matter) and connect.

Troubleshooting

• “Invalid credentials”: you entered your normal Google password. Use the app password from step 2.
• No “App passwords” page: 2-Step Verification isn’t on yet, or — for Google Workspace — your administrator has disabled app passwords. Ask them to allow them for your account.
• Labels in Gmail: folders created by AI Email Filter appear as labels in Gmail. That’s normal.

Next steps

Once connected, write your categories in your own words and run a test to see what the filter would do before anything moves. If the address receives mail from many different people — a public contact address, for example — turn on Check every email individually so each email is judged on its content. For deleting, Move to trash keeps everything recoverable.
